Mate Kraus originates from the heart of South America, where the borders of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet. This region is known for its lush subtropical forests, deep red fertile soil, and flowing rivers. In the mornings, mists envelop the landscape, creating a mystical atmosphere that nourishes the growth of yerba mate plants. Legend has it that the indigenous Guarani people discovered the invigorating properties of mate, considering it a gift from the gods that bestows strength and vitality.
Preparing Mate Kraus using the Gong Fu Cha method:
  • 🍵 Utensils: Use a small gaiwan or teapot (100-150 ml).
  • 🌡️ Water temperature: Heat water to 70-85°C. Water that is too hot can make the mate bitter.
  • 🌿 Mate quantity: Add about 5-7 grams of Mate Kraus to the bottom of the gaiwan or pot.
  • 💧 First “awakening” infusion: Pour hot water over the mate and immediately (after 5-10 seconds) pour it out. This cleanses the mate and opens its leaves.
  • Subsequent infusions: Pour hot water again and let it steep for 15-20 seconds. With each subsequent infusion, extend the steeping time by 5-10 seconds until the flavor begins to fade. Enjoy multiple infusions!
